Opatija: The Timeless Pearl of Croatian Tourism

Small, yet full of history, culture, and stunning views.

I’ve spent a good deal of time exploring Croatia beyond Zagreb, its capital, and Opatija absolutely deserves a special mention. Known as the cradle of Croatian tourism, this charming town on the Adriatic coast has a unique appeal.

Although, as I've visited Opatija right after many Croatians departed to the sea (15 August, 2025, a religious holiday in Croatia), I didn't expect so many old hotels closed, waiting for renovation or even looking abandoned and neglected.

Still, the flora and fauna of Opatija (the flowers and trees, and the birds) compensate all this.

Opatija's parks are heavenly. Well taken care of.

If you are botanist, you can learn a lot about the different kinds of plants, so nicely arranged and placed at different spots.

Why is Opatija so immensely important for Croatian tourism?

Opatija’s roots go deep, tracing back to Roman times when it was prized for its mild climate and therapeutic sea air.  It's no wonder that many Austro-Hungarian doctors and therapists saw that just staying at Opatija, enjoying the sea water would be so beneficial for different ailments.

Opatija's  true fame began in the 19th century, becoming the go-to resort for Austro-Hungarian aristocrats who built the grand villas and elegant hotels still admired today. This legacy positioned Opatija as Croatia’s early tourism powerhouse, a role it continues to embrace.

Even now, the town is a magnet for visitors seeking a blend of nature, culture, and wellness. Art nouveau architecture lines its seaside promenades, and lush parks offer calm escapes. The seaside lungomare walkway (11kilometres long, running between Volosko and Lovran, Opatija being the 2. spot on the path towards Istria) is a perfect path for a leisurely stroll with spectacular views, an absolute must for anyone doing Opatija photography.

Why visit Opatija?

Forget large, crowded resorts. Opatija is all about sophistication wrapped in a small-town feel. So many people, from foreign tourists to scientists, scholars, and those in the medical field, come here for both work and relaxation.

Scientists and medical professionals value Opatija for its clean air and its history as a wellness destination. The town has been home to numerous specialized health resorts and sanatoriums over the years, making it a hub for respiratory therapy and other treatments. This medical heritage attracts visitors who want to combine health benefits with holiday pleasures.

Foreigners are drawn to Opatija’s welcoming atmosphere, elegant cafés, and cultural events. Artists find a muse in the picturesque coastline, historic architecture, and vibrant festivals. This creative energy is palpable in galleries and studios, and ideal for those interested in Opatija photography.

What's the best places to have coffee in Opatija?

Relaxing after a day of sightseeing or photography is a must. Opatija offers a range of bars and cafés where you can enjoy a drink with a view.

There are not many specialty coffee place like in Zagreb that I have seen.

In fact, I haven't spotted any during my 3 hour walk under a very hot sun.

But you'll definitely enjoy coffee here, if you can have a view over the sea or the opposite direction, over the main church looming above the many hotels, and behind it, bringing you to an altitude of almost 1000 metres, a walking path with its peak on Učka.

  • Café Wagner: A historical institution, perfect for sipping a coffee or a cocktail on their terrace overlooking the sea. This Cafe is in Hotel Amadria Opatija (a hotel by the same name, Amadria, is in Zagreb, the Croatian capital. It belongs to the same hotel management.)

  • Cafe Strauss, right across Opatija's most famous beaches, used by the public since the early 20th century (not limited to any hotel guests at all!)

It is located in Hotel Palace Bellevue (famed for a , directly opposite the Slatina beach in the very heart of Opatija. Its open terrace is an ideal place to soak up the sun, view, atmosphere, and - of course – homemade desserts and craft coffee!

Each of these places offers a different flavor of Opatija’s local life and makes for a nice break during your Opatija photography excursions.

Opatija photography: capturing a town of contrasts

Whether at sunrise, when the old villas glow in soft light, or at golden hour by the sea, Opatija is a paradise for photographers. The juxtaposition of historic grandeur with natural beauty creates endless opportunities. Streets lined with Mediterranean greenery, the classic promenade hugging the rocky coastline, and the distant silhouette of Učka mountain—all make stunning photographic subjects.

If you’re passionate about photography or just looking to pick up a camera, Opatija’s diverse scenes will boost your portfolio while transporting you to a timeless world.
